Description
Scope and content: Yearbooks, spanning from 1943 to 1994, with only a few gaps, for the Browning Study Club of Nashville, Tennessee. Information in each yearbook generally includes: overall theme and individual programs for the year; names of hostesses, speakers, officers, and a roster of members; by-laws; committees; and related matters. Some yearbooks have notes or annotations, usually showing changes in programs or participants, luncheon reminders, or changes to the membership list. Occasionally, a member's death may be mentioned. Although the club produced a special yearbook for 1990-1991 on the occasion of its fiftieth anniversary, the contents of the yearbook remain the same as any other year, and do not include any special historical information about the club. Earliest yearbooks typically include a photograph of the club's founder, Mrs. C. A. (Bertha) Goding, in the front.

Biographical or Historical Data
The Browning Study Club was organized as a poetry and literary appreciation club on May 7, 1941, by Mrs. C. A. (Bertha) Goding. Most, if not all, of its members were women. The club met once a month for six to nine months out of the year, and meetings were generally held in members' homes. Meetings typically included a business meeting, a formal program, discussion, and a luncheon. Speakers were usually members but occasionally included special guests, such as professors from local universities. Although predominently a women's club, men were occasionally asked to be speakers. In 1965, the club stated its purpose was to "study the poems of Browning and the works of other great poets, philosophers, and religious teachers of the world." In 1994, the group stated its purpose was devoted to Robert and Elizabeth Barrett Browning "and of such other literary personalities and subjects as can be appropriately related."
